Mass-based Art and Literature Activities in Full Swing

White- and blue-collar workers, farmers and students in the DPRK are conducting art and literature activities, while bringing their talents into full bloom in the reality vibrant with creation and innovations.

Among them is Ri Kwang Suk, a worker at the Sinuiju Cosmetics Factory who is held dear and respected by the people.

As she was very fond of reading books and listening to music from her childhood, she created children’s literary works in her middle school days. While working at a factory after graduation from a middle school, she wrote the words of the song A Girl on a Steed in reflection of worthwhile working life and many other literary works.

The song is now widely sung by the people.

People from all walks of life, including workers, farmers and intellectuals, vie with each other to take part in the annual national prize literary works competition.

In the course of this, they steadily raise the level of their cultural attainments, and their prizewinning works are introduced in the collection of mass literary works and other publications and adapted for the screen.

This year, too, the national prize mass literary works competition took place amidst high enthusiasm of broad sections of working people in celebration of the Day of the Shining Star (February 16).

Contributed to the competition were more than 1 200 pieces of works, including full-length and short novels, draft poems and juvenile stories, and over 150 works of which were highly appreciated.

Everyone takes part in the national working people’s singing contest, which is held on several occasions, according to his/her wish and demand. Those who are gifted with extraordinary artistic abilities are sent to conservatory and professional organizations to make them bring their talents into full bloom.

The DPRK fully provides its people with all conditions and environment for participating in mass-based art and literature activities.

All provinces, cities, counties, industrial establishments and cooperative farms across the country have halls of culture, libraries and reading halls. Theatres and halls of culture in different parts of the country are equipped with facilities and musical instruments necessary for cultural and emotional life and artistic activities of working people.

The poems, songs, fine art works and others created by working people in reflection of the stirring reality of the times and the ennobling mental world of ordinary and beautiful humans are giving strong impetus to developing the country’s art and literature. The Korean people have become genuine creators and enjoyers of art and literature.
